WHAT CAN YOU EAT WITH DIABETES?

It is very difficult to discover for yourself what you can and cannot eat with diabetes. The main goal of a modified diet is to control blood sugar levels, but it is also important to eat healthy to prevent further diabetes complications. Food therefore plays an important role in the life of someone with diabetes. We therefore give you a number of tips about what you can and cannot eat with diabetes.

FOOD FOR DIABETES TYPE 1

Do you have type 1 diabetes? Then your body will no longer produce insulin and you will have to organize your diet to control blood sugar and care for the heart and blood vessels. There is no evidence that certain foods can delay or prevent the development of type 1 diabetes, but it is possible to prevent complications as much as possible with a stable insulin setting and a healthy diet.

HEALTHY BALANCE

There are various dietary patterns that have a positive effect on glucose levels and lower the risk of cardiovascular disease. There is no single ideal ratio between the amount of carbohydrates, protein and fats in a diet for diabetics. It is therefore important to listen to your body to determine which diet is right for you.

The Wheel of Five forms a good basis because it has the five important compartments:

  • vegetables and fruit,
  • spreading and cooking fats
  • fish, legumes, meat, egg, nuts and dairy
  • bread, grain products and potatoes
  • drinks

Sometimes the recommended amounts from the Wheel of Five in diabetes need to be adjusted, for example when it is better for someone to eat fewer carbohydrates or to lose weight.

SUGARS IN DIABETES TYPE 1

Some people think that sugar "causes" diabetes. But type 1 is caused by genetics and other factors. Yet many sweet foods contain a lot of carbohydrates and that can cause fluctuations in blood sugar levels. So try to avoid added sugars as much as possible.

FIBER HIGH PRODUCTS

Blood sugar can rise after a meal. To prevent the blood glucose level from rising too quickly, it is recommended to eat a lot of fiber. This includes whole grain products, vegetables and fruit.

FOOD IN TYPE 2 . DIABETES

In type 2 diabetes, you are less sensitive to insulin and you make less insulin. In contrast to people with type 1 diabetes, the symptoms of type 2 diabetes do not develop until later in life. (Read more about the differences between type 1 and type 2 diabetes in our blog.) The influence of diet is very large in type 2 diabetes. By eating healthy, you can initially lower the risk of type 2 diabetes, but also prevent complications and increase the chance that you will need less or no medication.

AN OPTIMAL DIET

For people with type 2 diabetes, the advice is to maintain a healthy lifestyle, with an appropriate diet. The aim is to maintain a healthy weight and control blood sugar. A diet with the right balance of foods is therefore of great importance, just like with type 1 diabetes. The Wheel of Five offers a good basis, but keep in mind that your body may have different needs. Consult a dietitian for a customized nutrition plan.

Take as few products as possible with saturated fat and trans fat and replace products with a lot of saturated fat with products with a lot of unsaturated fat. It is recommended to eat fish at least once a week, preferably oily fish. In addition, try to limit your daily salt intake to 6 grams. This is especially important with high blood pressure.

WHAT SHOULD YOU NOT EAT WITH TYPE 2 DIABETES?

There are a number of foods that have been proven to be associated with an increased risk of type 2 diabetes. It is therefore better to avoid these. These are the following foods:

  • Sugary soda and juice
  • Red meat (from 100 grams of unprocessed meat per day)
  • Processed meat (from 50 grams of processed meat per day)

WHAT SHOULD YOU EAT WITH TYPE 2 DIABETES?

  • Whole grain cereals
  • Green leafy vegetables
  • Fruit
  • Coffee
  • Yoghurt
